What we have learnt from exercise 2:
1. When translating a professional document, we must have the professional background to a certain degree – or read related documents of the particular profession.
甲、 cyclical recovery 週期性景氣循環
乙、 the remaining economies in transition 其它過渡性經濟體
2. “Past participle” is often used to modify (restricted; specified) the leading word, phrase or even sentence. When translating it, do not mistake it as the main verb in the sentence, and have to put it before the leading word sometimes.
甲、 “policy measures intended to avert overheating will reduce it further
i. Policy measures will reduce it further.
ii. Policy measures, which are intended to avert overheating
3. When translating “participle sentence,” you must be able to identify (retrieve) the omitted (hidden) subject of participle sentence first. Then, you decide whether to translate it into 2 sentences or mix them up in a single sentence.
甲、 “the upward movement in the prices of oil and several other commodities is unlikely to continue, reducing that stimulus to many developing countries”
i. Identify the original subject:
1. the upward movement reduces that similes to many developing countries
ii. translate it either into 2 sentences -- or in a single sentence
1. 由於油價或原物料的價格持續上揚會影響開發中國家的經濟成長,所以,上述價格在開發中國家的抑制〈抗議〉下,將不會持續上漲。
4. When translating, be aware of those “supplementary phrases,” which are usually followed by a comma.
甲、 “policy measures intended to avert overheating will reduce it further, including in the United States and China, the principle engines for the global economy at present.”
i. “the principle engines for the economy at present” is a “supplementary phrase” to specify its leading words – United States and China.
ii. Can be translated into:
1. …包含當前世界經濟的火車頭 – 美國與中國,也採取了這類政策…
