Australia begins to bury (geo-sequestrate) carbon dioxide

Canberra, Australia (AP) – Australia launches the first underground carbon dioxide depository in southern Victoria state. It is the only storage facility of its kind in the southern hemisphere, which collects the carbon dioxide emitted by a power plant and stores it two miles underground. This pilot program will help Australia reduce its greenhouse gas emissions drastically, researchers believe. However, environmentalists oppose this program criticizing that it is not a proper way to slash carbon emissions. (geosequestration)

The depository, a carbon grave, is located at a depleted natural gas field in the west Melbourne. The carbon dioxide is first condensed into liquid and then pumped underground. Through years of testing, scientists are convinced that this facility can be used to absorb 100,000 tons of greenhouse gas safely. Many believe that terrain can absorb a great amount of carbon dioxide, which leads to the program that intends to imprison the liquid carbon dioxide underground forever. This program has won the support of Australian government and influential local coal industry.

A senior chemical engineer told BBC, “If only we can prevent the stored carbon dioxide from leaking, it will be an effective cure to the carbon dioxide emissions.” Nevertheless, this program is still controversial for associated high cost. Moreover, the money invested in the Victorian Program should have been used to develop renewable energy instead, such as solar or wind power, since there are still too many unknown factors in the “carbon grave” initiative.

If only we can……, it will be…….
If only we could……, it will (would) be….

If only we should be able to prevent…, it would be….
It only we were to be able to prevent…, it would be….
